LANDFILL GROUNDWATER QUALITY

Groundwater quality and irrigation suitability assessment.

The Project is situated on an uncapped and unlined landfill with ground gas, leachate, buried asbestos and waste; and unconsolidated, highly permeable soils. The poor water storage capacity of sports field soils has increased water use, and maintenance cost.

Solution: We were engaged to install a 100mm diameter water supply bore and assess the potential use of confined groundwater for irrigation of the sports fields to reduce town water use and save maintenance costs. This comprised a groundwater quality monitoring program, waste classification of excavated soils and ANZECC irrigation suitability assessment including low-flow sampling; review of leachate and confined groundwater ionic composition; cumulative contaminant loading; and corrosion and fouling parameters.

Outcome: Our investigation provided a comprehensive assessment of groundwater quality, informing the Club of it’s potential use for irrigation, associated impacts and supported Council Approval for Works. Our work was the necessary first step in the Club effort to lower operating costs.
