RUGBY CLUB LANDFILL
- Brisbane, Queensland
Development of new infrastructure (suspended car park, netball courts, sports field lighting) on a historical landfill site.
The Project is situated on an uncapped and unlined landfill located within a culturally significant local area and adjacent to wetlands of high ecological value. Additionally, the presence of landfill gas, buried friable asbestos and waste; shallow and tidal groundwater, shallow leachate, acid sulfate soils and unconsolidated soil and waste presented challenging ground conditions for construction and future operation of the site.
Solution: We completed a human health and environmental risk assessment of landfill gas, waste, leachate and acid sulfate soils. To support construction and future site operations we identified and advised on design and construction of an asbestos barrier and gas protection; completed a waste classification for disposal and reuse; engaged with landfill operators and Council; and developed a Construction Environmental Management Plan to minimise human health and environmental impacts during construction.
Outcome: Our investigation achieved a thorough understanding of the Site’s contamination profile, informing the Club of project and environmental risks such that mitigation and treatments could be adopted throughout the design and construction process. Our work supported the Club’s submission of an Approval for Works to Council and informed the development of future disposal permit applications and building design.
