SOCCER SPORTS CLUB LANDFILL
- Brisbane, Queensland
Development of new players change room on a historical landfill site.
Construction had commenced without approvals or appropriate assessment which led to uncovering asbestos in excavated spoil, project stoppage and restricted site access.
Solution: We completed a human health and environmental risk assessment of landfill gas and excavated spoil. We developed LFG and asbestos protection measures and prepared a contaminated soil management plan (CSMP) that provided a framework to manage risks to human and ecological health associated with disturbing contamination during construction. The CSMP also included environmental management, monitoring and contingency measures to be implemented during construction to minimise the potential for environmental harm; a description of planning and approvals associated with asbestos, asbestos management planning, unexpected finds procedure, landfill gas management, waste soil management and general environmental management. We also developed a simple work strategy to limit the cost associated with managing the asbestos and allow the project to restart with the appropriate approvals in place.
Outcome: Our work provided the detail necessary to understand the risks associated with the uncovered waste; provided pragmatic solutions to limit the number of permits and increase onsite efficiency of contamination management; support approval and restart construction using the appropriate controls.
